A photocell sensor works by detecting the amount of ambient light in its environment and controlling an electrical load, such as lighting, based on the light levels.
Here’s how a photocell sensor works:
Light Detection: The photocell contains a light-sensitive component, usually a cadmium sulfide (CdS) cell or photodiode, that measures the intensity of ambient light. This component decreases resistance when exposed to light and increases resistance in darkness.Automatic Switching: Based on the light levels, the photocell sends a signal to a relay or switch to either turn the connected load (such as a light) on or off. When the light levels drop below a preset threshold (like at dusk), the sensor turns the lights on. Conversely, when the ambient light level increases (like at dawn), it turns the lights off.Energy Efficiency: By automating light control, the sensor helps reduce energy usage by ensuring lights are only on when needed, like during night hours or low-light conditions.
